The Life and Work of Jeremiah Kitavi

I am Jeremiah Kitavi, a Kenyan writer and social activist. I was born in Kenya in 1985 and grew up in the slums of Kibera. Despite the challenges I faced early in life, I was determined to get an education and make something of myself. After high school, I joined a youth organization that worked to empower young people living in poverty. It was through this work that I discovered my passion for writing.

Since then, I have been using my voice to defend the rights of the most vulnerable members of society. I have written about social Justice issues for various publications, including The Guardian, Al Jazeera, and The Huffington Post. My work has been anthologized in several books, including We Are ATM: Poems For Kenya (2019) and Rising: Voices from Kenyan Slums (2020). In addition to my writing, I also run a small NGO that provides educational opportunities for children living in poverty in Nairobi.

The Power of Writing

Writing has always been a powerful tool for me. It is how I give voice to the voiceless and shine a light on the issues that matter most to me. Through my writing, I have been able to reach a wide audience and create meaningful change. In 2015, my article “Nairobi’s Street Boys” helped raise awareness about the plight of young boys who are forced to live on the streets because they cannot afford to go to school. As a result of the article, several donors came forward to provide financial assistance to the boys featured in the story.

I believe that everyone has a story worth telling. By sharing our stories, we can create empathy and understanding among people who might otherwise never know about our experiences. This is why I am so passionate about helping others tell their stories. In addition to working with my NGO, I also offer free writing workshops for children living in poverty. Through these workshops, I hope to instill in these young people the confidence and skills they need to share their own stories with the world.
